30 sentences for safety, your health, working conditions, and basic answers.

- At work, the safest way to speak is short and loud.
- Learn the safety and health phrases first. If an accident happens, you will not have time to look for a sentence.
- Pronunciation is written in Roman letters. If you read it as written, people will usually understand you.
- If you do not understand, saying "๋ชจ๋ฅด๊ฒ ์ด์" (I don't know) is better than doing the work anyway and putting yourself in danger.

How to Say "No" Safely
At Korean workplaces, many people smile and say "๋ค" (yes). So if you say "๋ค" when you did not understand, people will think you agreed. You could get hurt or lose money.
When you want to say no, these sentences sound polite.
- "์ฃ์กํ๋ฐ์, ์ ๋ชจ๋ฅด๊ฒ ์ด์." (joesonghandeyo, jal moreugesseoyo โ "Sorry, I don't really understand.") โ Saying sorry first helps you avoid conflict.
- "์ค๋์ ์ด๋ ค์ธ ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์." (oneureun eoryeoul geot gatayo โ "I think today will be difficult.") โ This is softer than "๋ชป ํด์" (I can't).
- "๋ชธ์ด ์ ์ข์์ ๋ชป ํ๊ฒ ์ด์." (momi an joaseo mot hagesseoyo โ "I can't do it because I don't feel well.") โ You give the reason too.
- "์ํํด์ ์ ํ๊ณ ์ถ์ด์." (wiheomhaeseo an hago sipeoyo โ "I don't want to do it because it is dangerous.") โ For safety problems, it is OK to speak clearly.
- "๊ด๋ฆฌ์๋๊ป ๋ฌผ์ด๋ณผ๊ฒ์." (gwallijanimkke mureobolgeyo โ "I will ask the manager.") โ If you cannot answer right away, this gives you time.
Remember two things.
- If you did not understand, do not say "๋ค." Saying "๋ค์ ๋งํด ์ฃผ์ธ์" (Please say it again) is safer.
- You can refuse dangerous work. The ์ฐ์ ์์ ๋ณด๊ฑด๋ฒ (Occupational Safety and Health Act) says you can stop working when there is serious, immediate danger. If you are treated unfairly because you refused, you can get advice by calling 1350.
Things to Be Careful About
- When an accident happens, just saying "๋์์ฃผ์ธ์" (Help me) is enough. Do not try to make a full sentence.
- If you feel sick or hurt, do not wait. Tell someone the same day. If you tell them late, it becomes harder to get ์ฐ์ฌ (industrial accident compensation).
- Before you sign any document, say "์ ๊น๋ง์" (Wait a moment) and check what it says. If you do not know what the document is, do not sign it.
- Download a translation app on your phone before you need it. In a loud workplace, showing written words is faster.
Frequently Asked Questions
